TOUR DESCRIPTIONS
SOLDIERS
AND SAILORS MUSEUM (MEMORIAL SERVICE) /
NATIONALITY CLASSROOMS
Wednesday,
June 23
The Soldiers and Sailors
National Military Museum & Memorial is dedicated to the history and
memory
of the men and women of the United States in times of war.
Upon arrival, the USS Shangri-La Memorial
Service will be held. Following the
service, enjoy the unique and engaging exhibits begin with the Civil
War and
continue through to Desert Storm. The
exhibits express much more than the logistics and tools of war. They provide a better understanding of what
life was like on the home front as well as what the soldier experienced
on the
front. Make your way across the street
to the University of Pittsburgh campus.
Begin a guided tour of the Nationality Classrooms in the
University's
forty-two story Cathedral of Learning.
The twenty-four classrooms pay tribute to the heritage of
Pittsburgh's
many ethnic groups. Each functioning
classroom highlights one of numerous European, Scandinavian, Middle
Eastern,
African, and Asian cultures through original and recreated furnishings,
sculptured
and inlaid wood, carved stone, and stained glass. Lunch
on your own and shopping will be at Station Square just
across the bridge from Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle.
The site was the original Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad
Headquarters and has been restored to house over fifty shops and
restaurants. You may want to spend some
of your time there to take the Monongahela Incline to the top of Mt.
Washington
for the best views of the city below.
There is a nominal additional charge for the incline ride.

the city's surrounding neighborhoods, such as the view atop Mt.
Washington and
the thirty foot Tiffany windows in the Calvary Methodist Church in
Northside. Make a stop to tour Saint
Anthony’s Chapel which overlooks the Allegheny River and houses the
largest

from
the table of the Last Supper. Enjoy
